Chapter 18:  "DEAN MEETS GUNTHER, Part 6"

“I found this on the windshield of your truck,” Bryan says as he enters their room and hands Jimmy a piece of folded paper.

Jimmy unfolds the paper slowly. He reads the scribbled message and his expression changes from one of curiosity to shock, then joy and finally fear.

“What’s it say?” Danielle asks after a moment. She cannot stand the suspense any longer.

“C’mon!” Jimmy shouts as he pushes past his friends and out to his truck. He stops at the door and turns back to look at them. “I’ll explain on the way!” He leaps into the vehicle and starts up the engine. His friends rush out after him. The gang climbs into the truck and Jimmy streaks off.

“I’ve got to go,” Dean says. He climbs onto a huge motorcycle and changes his bioflage from a skin tone to a camouflage pattern.

“Where are you going now?” Randy asks with concern.

“I’ve got a hot tip on a deal at the docks,” he answers. Dean kicks down on the starter and the 2000cc motor on the menacing looking dirt bike roars to life. “This might be the break I’ve been hoping for!” he shouts over the rumble of the engine. The wide rear tire of the bike squeals as the machine lurches forward and Dean is launched down a winding tunnel.

Randy watches sadly as Dean disappears into the darkness of the stone corridor out of their hideaway. Despite his incredible abilities she worries about him. Especially now that he has encountered one so much like himself.

“This guy thinks he’s a vigilante, right?” Jimmy says as he navigates the truck down the treacherous dirt road. “That note was a tip on a drug shipment going out to the U.S. A big one. I’m sure he’ll try to stop it.”

“We should let him,” Gunther says from the back of the truck.

“What?” Bryan asks.

“We shouldn’t stop him from stopping drug runners,” Gunther says calmly. “What they are doing is illegal.”

“He’s right,” Danielle says. “We can’t help the drug dealers!”

“We’re not helping drug dealers,” Bryan explains. “We’re just getting a tissue sample. Then Gunther can help the big guy trash the drug dealers if he wants. Maybe teach him to catch some bad guys instead of tearing their limbs off and blowing them up.”

“This may be our last chance for a long while,” Jimmy says. He is watching the road intently. “If we can cut this guy off in time and get what we need we can go ahead and stop the drug dealers ourselves.”

“I suppose you are right, Jimmy,” Gunther agrees. “What has to be done has to be done.”

“Get ready!” Miller shouts into his radio. “They’ll be here any minute!”

Miller and his agents spread out around the dock. They are all careful to either take cover or blend in as dock workers. Dozens of clicks can be heard as the agents “lock and load” their weapons.

“Something’s coming,” an agent reports from a crane.

A cloud of smoke can be seen approaching the docks. A second cloud appears on an intersecting road. It soon becomes clear that the first dust cloud is from a man on a motorcycle and the second is from a large pickup truck.

“It’s them,” the lookout reports. “Damn! They’re going to intercept each other about a mile up the road!”

“They’re not going to reach us,” Miller mumbles to himself. “They’re not going to reach us!” he shouts as the thought fully hits him. He scrambles for his radio. “Get some 4x4s out there!” he commands. “Slow one of them down! They mustn’t run into each other before they reach the planned location!”
