BUT I'M A MILLIONAIRE
I am so pissed right now at the criminal justice system in Minnesota. For those of you who may not be aware of the story, Vikings receiver and major head case Randy Moss decided last Tuesday afternoon that he just had to make an illegal left turn. As he attempted this maneuver, his path was blocked by a traffic officer. Deciding that he was above the law, Moss proceeded to use his car to push the officer more then a half block until he finally tapped his accelerator so hard that he knocked the officer face down into the street. Witnesses report that the officer had one hand on the hood of Moss's car, demanding he stop, while with the other hand she radioed for help. After the officer fell, Moss stopped. I'm surprised he didn't just run right over her. I'm sure the authorities would have looked the other way. Instead of being booked for felony assault (as early statements from the district attorney said he would be), Moss was charged with two misdemeanors. The reasoning was that he didn't intentionally mean to hurt the officer. So, instead of sitting in a cell, Moss left jail on Wednesday afternoon whistling! Not only that, he stated that he had done nothing wrong and "was treated bad." Recently here in Kansas City, a 13 year old boy stole a pick up truck. He was finally stopped and the truck was surrounded by police. After repeated orders to get out of the truck, the boy decided to use the truck to push the officers out of his way. For his efforts, he was shot to death. The reason for the shooting was that the officer feared for his life. Randy Moss is lucky that the traffic police in Minneapolis don't carry weapons. He's even luckier that the local yokels who run the city are so star struck that instead of sitting in jail this weekend, he'll get to play football. Moss has been a thug his whole life and shows no signs of changing. What is it going to take before these athletes stop getting preferential treatment because of who they are? And it's not just Moss. This has been going on for years. Do you think anyone besides OJ Simpson could have gotten away with his "slow speed" chase on the freeway a few years ago? Hell no! I get the Los Angeles television channels on my dish, and I've seen many a chase since then. The cops are right in there. They aren't letting them just drive and drive until they decide to stop. Hell, how many times did the cops go to OJ's house after his wife would call them because he was beating her ass and just tell them to "work it out?"
It's time that these so called "role models" learn that they are not so special that they are above the law! As I write this, Moss is holding a press conference. He just said that he "has gone through a lot" and that his teammates have accepted his apology. He also apologized to the people who mean the most to him, including his mother and MICHAEL JORDAN!! He's apologizing because he embarrassed them, not for what he did. He sure didn't apologize to the woman he could have killed. He said he was just "taking the woman for a ride" and that he knows the difference between a misdemeanor and a felony. It hurts him that the word "felony" was associated with his name. He's also upset that they found marijuana in his car. He says that he has many cars and that he has to go through his mind to see who has been in his cars since it certainly isn't his. Of course not, Randy. And the reason you got kicked out of Florida State and were sentenced to a year in prison was for possession of marijuana that "wasn't yours." Jesus Christ! He just said that he was lucky the officer was "a female." Because he has lots of females in his life, like his mom and his children and that it proves that he would never hurt a female. I need to turn this off before I pull an Elvis and but a bullet through the picture tube!
IN THIS VERSION, THE SHIP DOESN'T SINK
Some time back, I commented on the mom and pop video store in Utah that took it upon themselves to edit out the nudity and love scene from copies of "Titanic" they were renting. Now it appears to have grown into a full fledged business. Not surprisingly, both of the major companies offering this service are also based in Utah. They deny that this is censorship in any way. I wonder if they'd like me to take the bible and cut out parts I don't like and then sell it as THE BIBLE! They protest about enforcement of the ratings systems. Hey, guess what? The rating system is not a law. IT'S A GUIDELINE! I can't tell you how many parents have called me over the years complaining about their child seeing a movie they shouldn't have. "Why did my daughter see an R rated movie," I'm asked. My first response usually is, "I don't know. Why did she? Did you tell her she couldn't see it?" People, you're problem is not with me, it's with your kids. There are more then 80 Clean-Flicks retail stores. They even offer customers the option of bringing in their own store bought videos and having them edited.....oops, sorry, "cleaned." It would take me two issues of PCR to go into the reasons that filmmakers and others would have against this process. Besides the obvious arguments, my biggest question is this: WHY DO THE PEOPLE AT CLEAN-FLICKS (or competitor MovieMask) FEEL THEY KNOW WHAT I THINK IS BAD OR IMPURE OR WRONG? Who's running these companies, Adolph Hitler?? When we rely on others to tell us what is suitable for us to watch then we are becoming cattle. We are allowing them to lead us where they want, to see only what they want us to see, to enjoy only what they feel is enjoyable. And, to quote Art Carney in "Firestarter," unless I woke up this morning in Russia, I'm certainly not ready to give up my freedom of choice.
ANOTHER SIGN THE APOCALYPSE IS UPON US
This rumor is popping up on DVD bulletin boards everywhere. Apparently, he was so pleased with his "retooling" of "ET," that director Steven Spielberg wants to take a shot at "Jaws," including doing the shark in CGI. Needless to say, I'll be receiving my mail at the Federal Penitentiary here in Leavenworth following my brutal torture of Mr. Spielberg.
STILL FAB
In some Beatles related news: this Tuesday saw the long awaited release of the deluxe DVD edition of "A Hard Day's Night." Look for a review of this film and "Grease" next week.
Paul McCartney plans to release a live album/DVD this holiday season (Nov 26) recorded on his current tour. Entitled "Back in the US," the three hour documentary will follow the cute one and his life on the road.
Readers of Rolling Stone magazine named REVOLVER the top album of all time. The remaining top five:
2. NEVERMIND - Nirvana
3. SGT PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND - The Beatles
4. JOSHUA TREE - U2
5. THE BEATLES - WHITE ALBUM - The Beatles
OK, maybe it's me, but I really don't understand the whole Nirvana thing. It's a good album, granted, but the 2nd best of ALL TIME. Of course, I still don't understand the comparison of Kurt Cobain to John Lennon, except that they both died too soon. Any thoughts? Send them on.
Finally, Yoko Ono has filed charges against her and John Lennon's former personal assistant, saying that he has made thousands of dollars on items he stole from the Lennon's apartment. She is also trying to stop his selling of 374 pictures he took of the family while he was employed by them.
PASSING ON
Cliff Gorman, who won a Tony award for his portrayal of Lenny Bruce in the 1971 show "Lenny," passed away at age 65 of leukemia. Replaced by Dustin Hoffman for the film version of the show, Gorman later re-created his character in the film within a film, "The Standup," in Bob Fosse's "All That Jazz."
Well, that's it for this week. See ya!
