Mad Matt's Plastic People

WELCOME HARRY POTTER FANS!!! There are SO many Harry Potter toys out there now I don't even know where to begin...

Wait...wait...I know.......WHO CARES!?!

Now let's talk about something worthwhile...hmmmm...how about....

MEGO TOYS
Yeah, let's do that instead. A long time ago (the '50s to be exact), a small toy manufacturer started making toys...MEGO...but they did not get into the action-figure biz until 1971, trying to catch up to Hasbro's G.I.Joe. Well, they didn't want to copy the 12in. guy (hmmm), so instead, they said "Hey 8 inches is cool...right?" and so Action Jackson was born (YIPEEE!!! from the crowd). After that they got the rights to several things, televison, comic books, and even some movie characters...some were successful...some...well...

MEGO's biggest screwup (and their first steps toward the end) was not taking on the rights to a little film in 1977 called STAR WARS...(it'll never sell...)

The company tried to keep up once again by releasing 12" and 3¾" figures, but to no avail. MEGO went bankrupt in 1982.

However, don't cry yet...they didn't do too bad. It was estimated that at its peak, MEGO produced around 12 million 8-inch folks a year for 10 years. Not too shabby.

They had a pretty good selection of figures depending what you were into: sci-fi, westerns, superheroes, T.V. shows, comic books, knights, pirates, action, military, and fantasy...pretty much something for everyone.

They also had a wide selection of playsets and vehicles for the guys. And girls, let's not forget Dinah-Mite -- MEGO's answer to Barbie!!!

Well, I could go on and on but I found a place that all you HARDCORE MEGO fans need to check out -- the Mego Museum at www.megomuseum.com

Sorry I did not have any pics this time, but all my MEGO stuff is in my storage shed....I will be digging into it shortly for a bunch-o-junk and photos of it to bring to you...

Overall...I don't think MEGO had future collectability in mind when they started. They (like ALL of us) were just trying to make a buck, but try to find some of these 8-inch wonders in mint condition today and I bet you pay more than the original retail price of $1.99...

I'll give the MEGO lineup 4.5 skulls out of 5 for giving it a good honest try...

Until next time,
MAD MATT
