The Tampa Film Review: A Retrospective

As we Floridians are celebrating some landmark success of our new Governor's war against Big Insurance and runaway policy rates, so on a national scale has there been some big news.

Hillary
It's official. Love her or hate her, Hillary Rodham Clinton is running for President of the United States of America in 2008. Inarguably the most polarizing of the announced Democratic candidates, she certainly has her work cut out for her.

Barack Obama seems the friendlier choice, especially now that some mild controversy regarding supposed childhood Muslim connections has been debunked.

For many pundits, it seems to come down to which "first" Democratic Americans want...er...first: The first woman president or the first black president. After all these years, we're still dealing with labels like this, but that's not really surprising to me.

But hey, look at it this way: if Hillary gets in, it puts BILL back in the White House! WooHoo, party time!

Letters to the Editor President Bush's State of the Union Address.
Just a few quick personal reactions to the president's seventh State of the Union address (Jan 23, 2007). While there were certainly no big surprises announced as far as the War in Iraq, I was a little surprised how far he went to win back the...what is it now...72 percent that disapprove of him? Happy talk about cutting back on use of oil by 40% by 2017, increasing dependence of ethanol, and supporting research for improving battery power (presumably for hybrid cars) is terrific as far as it goes, but I also remember we were supposed to go to Mars and I don't hear much about that anymore. Parts of the speech regarding immigration (still weak on that), and payroll deductions for an expanded heath care system arrived to mixed reviews. But the escalation in troops sent to Iraq continues. Whatever...

E. Howard Hunt Dead at 88
E. Howard Hunt, one of the original Watergate burglars (actually he hates being called that, preferring "conspirators" since he never entered the building, only masterminded the crime) has died of pnuemonia at age 88.

A Hooters Sunday of Note
Long-time readers know that William Moriaty and I make it a habit to frequent the neighborhood Hooters restaurant for laughs and libations nearly every Sunday evening. Last Sunday's gathering was notable in that it marked the first appearance of Tampa Film Review honcho Paul Guzzo. Welcome, Paul!! *clinks glasses*. Also in attendance were Joel & Cathy Wynkoop, Chris Woods, and Gus Perez. With so many filmmakers at the table, it's hard not to discuss our favorite past time. Naturally, yours truly didn't think to bring a camera to record any of this. Fifty lashes!

After the heady rush of the 3rd Anniversary TFR festivities, Paul returns to PCR this week with a new Filmlook column.

Dinosaur, Jr. Invades Ybor City and The Cuban Club
And our own Terence Nuzum was in attendance last Friday, January 19th. Said it was a great concert and he got to meet the main man himself. Pictured above, left to right, Gordon Tarpley, J. Mascis (of Dinosaur Jr.), Natalie Campisi, Angela Campisi, and Terence Nuzum.
