Death By CultureGilligan's Creator is Dead
POSTED BY VINNIE BLESI, July 13, 2011    Share

Sherwood Schwartz passed away this week, on July 12, 2011, at the age of 94. His creation of 60's shows, " Gilligan's Island" and "The Brady Bunch", were early influences in this fanboy's life.

As a pre-teen, his "Gilligan's Island" franchise provided this young male with the hard decision. Do I like Maryanne or Ginger? I liked Maryanne (Dawn Wells), and it was one of my early boyhood crushes. But the antics of the Skipper, Gilligan and the Howell's was enough to keep this young teen watching. Schwartz had a great cast, with not a weak character in the bunch.

His "Brady Bunch" idea, followed some of the same themes, but added additional teen female and male heartthrobs for every age. Long before "tween" shows and movies, which have permeated our current culture, Schwartz had the insight to add "tween" characters into "The Brady Bunch". Whether you were a fan of Greg or Marsha, Marsha, Marsha, you were drawn to these characters.

"The Brady Bunch" show, in its surrealism, with Alice and her butcher love, has lived on to become a Musical production as well as two film remakes.

I still remember the intense "Hawaii" episode!

According to Wikipedia, the "Brady Bunch" show had a plethora of celebrity appearances.

Thank you Sherwood Schwartz, posthumously , for creating two classic silly sitcoms that are still imprinted into my psyche. I feel that I am able to laugh at some of life's hardships due to your creative comedy.
