Death By CultureHellraiser, Porn Star Noise and TV Preview
POSTED BY VINNIE BLESI, October 6, 2012    Share

The "Hellraiser" movie chain has been tainted by too many bad sequels. But the first movie by author Clive Barker, in his directorially debut, remains a classic that bears a new watching.

No one knows their own material like the author, and Barker pulls off a one off success, not only with his great direction but his depiction of the subject matter. "Hellraiser" is not like any predictable genre horror movie and Barker conveys this convincingly in his freshman effort. Clive Barker is not a great filmmaker but his "Hellraiser" is a great film.

Depicting both the occult and sexual deviance, "Hellraiser" is about opening a gateway to another dimension. A world of such horror and terror and temptation, that it is sought out by those fools looking to find some strange power or pleasure. By acquiring a puzzle box and solving it the unwitting or just foolish soul unleashes a new dimension of terror occupied by the Cenobites. Barker's puzzle box draws comparison to H.P. Lovecraft's fiction, or non-fiction, about opening an occult portal and releasing the old Gods.

Barker's "Hellraiser" goes beyond the simple framework I have offered here. If you have not seen this movie, I suggest it. If you have seen it, I suggest you watch it again. "Hellraiser" is a disturbing take on horror, the occult, other dimensions, pleasure and pain, deviance and our deep seated Human desire for a new skin.

Porn Star Noise

Gonzo porn star Sasha Grey, whose porn film antics are so perverse they cannot be mentioned here, has announced she has left the porn business to pursue a real film career as an actress. Oh Traci Lords where are you when we need you?

As laughable as my previous statement is, Grey also has a noise band, "ATelecine". I have downloaded their music and it is amateurish and just bad. Yet she has a recording contract in with a European label. I guess if you go all the way and then go all the way, and then go all the way, you get the idea.

While Sasha Grey has great musical tastes, citing Throbbing Gristle and Current 93 as her favorite bands, if she wants to make good music, she should call me. Just kidding, although I could record and produce something better than the crap that ATelecine is making. (Sasha give me a call).

Death by Culture Fall TV Preview

Two shows I can recommend off the bat is "Elementary", the new incarnation of Sherlock Holmes in modern day New York. With his unwitting, so far, companion "Watson" played by Lucy Liu, this is the show that is not only good but holds the promise of getting better. I also like the new Fox comedy "Ben and Kate", which is a good compliment "New Girl".

Genre show I have not seen yet are Beauty and the Beast (CW),666 Park Avenue (ABC),
and Arrow (CW).
I refuse to watch any JJ Abrams shows.
