In a Porcelain Raft POSTED BY VINNIE BLESI, February 12, 2012 Share
Imagine Jesus and Mary Chain and New Order meeting in a NYC basement and recording a lofi masterpiece, that is saturated in reverb and synthesizer washes. That is what Italian born Mauro Remiddi has created in his new recording, "Strange Weekend", under his new band name Porcelain Raft.
Remiddi does not try to hide his raw home recording technique, relying on obvious drum machine tracks. On each track there is a texture that is usually lost on lofi bands. Remiddi uses not only the drum machines and effects to get his sound, but the mixes are full of synths, guitar, both electric and acoustic, and his layering haunting falsetto vocals.
As a home music enthusiast, I am amazed at the detail to recording, texture and ambience that went into this self recording.
Mauro Remiddi spent much of the early 2000's working on an indie rock band project, Sunny Day Sets Fire, that finally got a CD released in 2008. Remiddi left the band soon after that and has proven with the debut Porcelain Raft CD that it is much better than the typical indie band approach.
Some may say that lo-fi is dead, but Porcelain Raft has resurrected it with "Strange Weekend".
