Music MathersI Will Scratch Your Back
POSTED BY VINNIE BLESI, January 28, 2014    Share

In 2010, Peter Gabriel released a cd of covers with orchestral arrangements. Other than "Book of Love" I found that release lacking. The concept was brilliant. He envisioned that those artists he covered would in turn cover a Peter Gabriel song.

While not every artist ended up participating, we have a new release for 2014, "And I'll Scratch Yours", which shows how great Gabriel's songs are with these new reworkings. These are not just covers but new concepts.

David Byrne's "I Don't Remember" is rich in synth noises and reinterprets the song to 2014. Bon Iver stepped in to reinterpret "Come Talk to Me". While I am not a fan of Bon Iver they pull off this track with a folk style beginning and ending with a swell.

Regina Spektor's version of "The Blood of Eden" is the most conventional track on the Cd , but it is so powerful with her great vocal. Stephin Merritt from The Magnetic Fields offers up "Not one of Us" in an 80's sci-fi interpretation.

After that the fun begins, with unknown artist Joseph Arthur's stellar minimal version of "Shock the Monkey". Indy rock darlings version The Arcade Fire does "Games Without Frontiers". Brian Eno wakes up from his U2 coma to contribute "Mother of Violence" and finally probably one of the last tracks recorded by the late Lou Reed, a raw guitar noise version of "Solsbury Hill".

I can do without the tracks by Paul Simon and Randy Newman, but overall there is some great interpretations, not covers, of the great songs by Peter Gabriel.
