Death By CultureS&H Green Stamps
POSTED BY VINNIE BLESI, April 18, 2011    Share

To this day I have a Random House college dictionary, that I still use, because it is great and complete. I was given this dictionary to me in the 70's by my late mother, which she used her S&H Green Stamps to redeem for me at the S&H Green Stamp store that used to be on Dale Mabry here in Tampa, Fl. Right now the younger reader's heads are prolly spinning like Regan's head in "The Exorcist". Green Stamps! WTF. OMG.

Locally here in Tampa, Publix supermarkets would give out "Green Stamps", based on the dollar amount purchased. S&H Green Stamps was a country wide program and the pioneer in customer rewards. You licked your green stamps and collected them in folders. You could then go to a local S&H Green Stamp store to redeem your stamps for stuff. S&H were pioneers in consumer loyalty and paved the way for things like credit card points and customer loyalty rewards.

Researching this article I found that there is still a lot of interest in the S&H Green Stamp program. I have included links below to follow not only the history of Green Stamps but current conversations about the program.

I am grateful, because that Random House dictionary that I got from Green Stamps has served me well for over 35 years.
