BUCS BACK TO WORK
Believe it or not, Buc fans, but the team has just completed their first minicamp under new head coach Jon Gruden. Not suprisingly, the energetic Gruden had everyone, including coaching staff, in a very up tempo, go get 'em frame of mind. Even 20+ year Defensive Coordinator Monte Kiffin noticed a major change from the stoic demeaner of former head man, Tony Dungy.

John GrudenIt’s going be like spring ball back in college when the offense went against the defense, It’s like that here. I think we (the defense) did pretty good the first couple days, but they weren’t going to sit around flat-footed. They came after us and hit us with some stuff this morning that was wide open. We’ve got to go back to the blackboard and go back to work, too.”

High praise, considering how lackluster our offensive attack was the last 5 years, if you could even call it an offensive attack. And as I suspected would be the case, Gruden has no problem at all getting in people's faces if they don't live up to expectations....even on a play-by-play basis.

Some of you may recall that in 1999, when the Bucco's were on their way to the only Division championship in the Dungy era, they got PASTED by Grudens Oakland Raiders to the tune of 45 - 0. If players on Tampa had forgotten about that beating, it wasn't forgotten long as Gruden used the past to motivate the future of "his" Bucs.

The defensive coaching staff arrived at One Buc Place at 6:30am Sunday morning only to see Gruden and his quarterback trio of Brad Johnson, Sean King, and Rob Johnson already going over plays to take advantage of Kiffin's defense, which is arguably one of the best D's in the NFL the past 5 years.

Wonderful words are being mentioned in the same breath as Tampa Bays offense, such as "enthusiastic" and my personal favorite "stretching the field", which means going deep, my friends. Looks like the 2 yards and a cloud of dust mentality is dead and buried. Good riddance. Don't even give it a headstone, lest we stumble over it again.

This is exactly what I was hoping would transpire when I wholeheartedly gave the Gruden hiring my total, unequivocable support. Ladies and gentlemen....the Mattster is VERY excited about the future of my beloved Bucs.

......And I'm definitly ready for some football!!!!!

EDUCATION PLAN "BUSH"WHACKED
As is the case much of the time in politics, promises made during a campaign are ones made to be broken.

The platform of education that Bush hung over Gore's head like stinking garlic is all but lost, now that Bushy has decided to all but eliminate funds approved by Congress. You may remember how George kept contemplating on the struggles of our young people, and how he would not fail them so that, and I'm quoting here, "No child be left behind". Yeah.....right.

Of course, the program is still there.....he's just cut all the money that it needs to survive. This way, he'll be able to smile at the nation in two years and proclaim that he lived up to his campaign promise.

It's becoming quite clear this man doesn't understand economics, so let me try my hand at tutelage....

If you have a car, and want it to go forward, you can press the accellerator all the way down to China and you won't move if you DON'T HAVE GAS IN THE TANK!!!. In the same way, what's the use of having a program you never had any intention of funding?

Now, I know our nation is at a time of crisis, and we need to support our leaders, most specifically Mr. Bush, but from where I come from crapola is crapola. You can spray with as much Paul Sebastion as you want, yet it will remain crapola. Even stinkier is the reality the Bush just really doesn't seeem to care. I find this terribly disconcerting, especially since I used this space during the election fiasco to support him. Did I say "used this space"? Sorry, I meant "wasted this space".

With every passing day another mushroom cloud of deception appears over the horizon of the Republican party. And in what I'm sure will astound and suprise everyone who knows me, I'm giving more than casual consideration toward abandoning the Republicans in favor of a group of men who truly care about issues facing the majority of Americans, the Democratic party.

It has gotten to the point where I literally could write each Matt's Rail on Republican ridiculousness, and how they've abandoned the "people". Well, not all people. Not the big corporations like the Enrons who paid zero taxes last year, compared to someone who made 18,000 last year, which required taxes of 2,000. Now tell me, somebody. How the hell does THAT work????? More than perplexing, I find it criminal, fraudulant and insulting.

Big enough, I am, to admit that while I was living in splendor, the R party was okay by me. But then I lost my job, had time on my hands, watched CSPAN, and experienced a most amazing thing......I AWOKE!

And while he probably doesn't read this column, or the PCR for that matter, I'd like to take this opportunity to do something I never thought I'd do.......

To Mr. Al Gore...." I apologize for being so wrong ". It won't happen again. (LOL! And I never thought I'd hear you say it, Matt! But, you've got a lot of company... more and more all the time.---Nolan

Till next time, take care, and God bless
Matt
