Ashley's Hollywood

I just read the afterthoughts of my first column and frankly, I am proud that everyone has an opinion about it, whether it be good or bad. I am young, that is a fact, but that certainly does not mean that I am “unaware” of movie history before 1995. Roy Scheider is a terrific actor and I respect him deeply but, that being said, I choose to write about more current topics that are interesting to me. I am fully aware of the fact that my column does not appeal to everyone here at the PCR, nor should it. Now wait! Before we have more gunfire between columnists I will explain a new feature. I will attempt to write something small, but significant, in each article per week for the masses (crazed fan boys).

I am a sarcastic person, you must understand that. No one should take everything I say personally or take it at face value. Hollywood is a screwed up place indeed, but it’s a topic that I hold dear to my heart. I will be attending college in the fall with entertainment as a major. Its my life, every aspect of it.

The whole purpose of my column is to give me experience, to have fun, and most of all to make Uncle Nolan laugh. Please Please Please, no one take me too seriously and I apologize if I offended anyone.

On with the current topic...(A slight change from schedule)

First off, the amazing Roy Scheider. Scheider was born November 10, 1932¹ in Orange, New Jersey. Roy began his acting career in the 1964 movie, “Curse of the Living Corpse” as Philip Sinclair under the name Roy R. Scheider. He has wowed us over the years in such notable films as “The French Connection,” “Marathon Man,” “All that Jazz,” and “Jaws.” There have been so many more that I don’t have room to even mention, more than 50. Keeping up with the current news, you will be glad to know that Roy is currently filming the movie “Citizen Verdict” co-starring Jerry Springer. Maybe you won’t be glad to know that…I figured I’d mention it regardless.

On to another good and memorable actor, the one and only John Saxon. Saxon has been in no less than 80 films and appeared beside the late martial arts great, Bruce Lee, in “Enter the Dragon.” John is also well-known as a character actor for his roles in, “The Unforgiven,” “Warhunt,” and, “The Big Fisherman.” John Saxon was originally a model and then later became an actor, after studying dramatic arts in high school. At one point in his career he was the heartthrob of the moment to the teeny-bopper girls. Though it was brief. He was most recently seen alongside the talented actor Gabriel Byrne and Patrick Bergin in 2001’s "The Courier." If you would like to write to John Saxon, his most recent mailing address is as follows.

Fact or Fiction?
Once upon a time, there was a convention. It was like no convention ever before. It had goblins, stars, and storm troopers wandering the isles. Its name was DragonCon. At one point during the convention a dark-haired spectator wandered into the loo, to let loose all that delicious Diet Coke from the day. Once she was fully relieved she walked to the sink and began to wash her hands. Suddenly, out of nowhere, an older woman with dark brown frizzy hair approached the young woman, with one eye somewhat lower than the other, and eyed the girl for a moment. The young girl, somewhat alarmed, stared back unknowing who the lady was. A voice crept from the woman’s lips and said, "Are you a natural red-head?" Not knowing what to say she muttered softly, "no." The older femme seemed to be surprised and went on to tell her how wonderful an emerald color would look on the girl. As fast as the lady had appeared, she disappeared. The young woman sat stunned for a moment and then exited the loo.

Fact or fiction?

Fact...and the older woman was famed actress Karen Black. At the time, I had absolutely no clue who she was. I figured she was some psycho and left it at that. Later in the day I saw Karen at her table signing autographs and quickly told my father about the incident. It was then that I discovered the talent that had just crossed paths with me. An interesting moment in my life that I almost never knew how interesting it really was.

Karen Black can be seen currently in the Rob Zombie film, "House of 1000 Corpses." Black plays the crazy mother and she does the part too well. The movie itself is quite twisted but worth seeing.

That’s it for this week, join me next week as we take another look into LaLa land.

¹ According to Roy Scheider fan/historian/biographer Michael A. Smith, altho Roy Scheider's birth year is listed on multiple websites as 1932, Scheider's actual birth year is 1933. For years it was listed as 1935, due to an error reading his birth certificate, the confusion seems to stem from that. Mike has met and talked to Scheider and ought to know.
