The first Gasparilla Film Festival is now a part of Tampa history and I was happy and proud to be a part of it.

The 5-day fest, the most ambitious of its kind in the area (the former TamBay Fest would be next on that list), met or exceeded expectations as far as decent audience numbers and adequate media coverage.

Of course it was not without its critics, glitches, missed schedules, cancelled appearances, and technical snafus, I don't know of any large event I've ever been to that hasn't suffered some or all of these setbacks. The organizers have listened to everyone and will fine-tune things for next year. But all in all, I think Eric Odum, Krista Soroka, the Guzzo Bros. and company can look back with pride at a job well done.

We didn't get many pix in the short time we were there Sunday afternoon, but we got a couple. Below, GFF director Eric Odum, left, in front of the Gasparilla Press Background with Immaculate Misconception star Courtnee Draper, and yours truly on far right. Click on pics to enlarge in a new browser window.

On a personal note: thanks again to festival director Eric Odum for my opportunity to juror the Young Filmmaker Series and select its winner (reviews on the Message Board here). AND.....for the the unexpected shout-out during the Q&A following Immaculate Misconception Sunday afternoon where I was publicly introduced to the packed house as a "celebrity blogger" (haha, I love that. Although I usually describe PCR was an online magazine, hey, to be called a celebrity blogger felt pretty good right then!). Thank you, Eric.

At left, local veteran actor Robert Elfstrom with yours truly and PCR's own Chris Woods. Click to enlarge.

Since I was unable to make all five days, I appreciate Message Board posters TampaFilm Fan and The_Truth for their reviews of the movies and events (their input starts here). On the same thread can be found reactions and responses from Paul Guzzo. Check it out. (Paul has pledged to write up a more fully-realized personal account of his experience in a new Filmlook column next week.)

The Horror & Hotties Film Festival
On Saturday, and as Gasparilla was entering its fourth day, across town, the little horror festival that could, Andy Lalino's Horror & Hotties Film Fest, was tearing up the campus at USF's Cooper Hall.

Due to prior commitments and a sucky transportation situation, I was unable to attend HHFF at all, but I understand it was terrific. The first Message Board posts regarding it start here. Local film legend Chris Woods has written up his overview of the entire event here, and the event-meister himself Andy Lalino has contributed his personal experiences in this week's Oddservations!

LETTERS...
Featured in this week's Lettercol, a writer has contributed some very special memories of Snuffy Smith artist/creator Fred Laswell, along with photos from the distant past! I trust you'll enjoy it as much as I did.
