In this episode of TWON, George Streets and his nephew David Jackson talked about their enthusiasm, fandom and knowledge regarding WWE wrestling. I am not a huge wrestling fan, so much of the lingo and nomenclature is foreign to me. WWE is what was formerly known as WWF (World Wrestling Federation), and, as I understand it now from George, the "E" in WWE stands for "entertainment" (and "get the 'f' out", says George).
David Jackson had entered the "tough guy competition" sponsored by MTV and had recently understood his position to be a finalist. This is a very exciting development and he talked about how that came about. He also spoke of being exposed to wrestling at a very young age, when he attended a live event in Tampa, as having a major influence on his deciding to persue it more professionally.
One topic discussed by the whole group in turn was "is it actually a sport?" and "if it isn't, does it matter?" (Generally the answer was "yes" to the former, and "no" to the latter---and that whatever you call it, it generates incredible revenue.)
George Streets is, among other things, an active event photographer. He brought along a slide show which included about 16 or so great shots of wrestling matches and conventions he's attended.
Teenager Jamie Rodriguez, a big fan of wrestling for many years, is usually behind the cameras on The World of Nolan, but decided to step into the limelight this episode as my co-host to join in on the discussion.
Any live phone calls we got jumped right in on the fandom, but a couple of them centered around the possible dangers of children imitating the moves professional wrestlers make (or seem to make). This was addressed by the panel.
Special note: The announcer for this episode of TWON was Ronald Canova, my brother, whose birthday is today. It is only the second time he's ever appeared on television (the first was with me on Malcolm's show), and I was glad to put the spotlight on him one more time.
Since this was strictly a fan-oriented show, there is no "contact information" on WWE as such, but George Streets would likely enjoy hearing from fellow fans of wrestling. He can be reached at: gstr233762@aol.com.
